Halandsleden Walk #1: Rolfstorp-Varberg (Wednesday 25/05-16)

The first Hallandsleden walk was between Rolfstorp and Varberg, was 14.5km long and took 3h49min. This walk actually happens to coincide with the first part of E1 through Sweden. It was a quite unplanned walk. Actually my mother and I planned to make a Hallandsleden walk in Kungsbacka municipality but it was raining there that day and during the early morning we instead made quick plans and decided to walk near Varberg. So we took the car to Varberg and then the bus to Rolfstorp and walked from there.

Unlike Bohusleden the terrain at Hallandsleden tends to be much flatter for the most part and this was no exception. In fact this walk had the flattest terrain of all the long-distance walks so far. There was plenty of farm land almost all the way until Varberg, which makes it the distinguishing characteristic of this walk. Without further ado, here are some pictures from the walk (including possible descriptions, please note that I took relatively few photos during this and the next walk but started taking more photos during the walks after that):

1.

The trail follows the old railway embankment to the railway between Varberg and Kinnared. It was inaugurated in 1911 and was discontinued 50 years later.

The photo shows not only a view of the farm lands but in the distance it also shows the six 127m high masts belonging to Grimetons radio station. The radio station was inaugurated in 1924 and was an important communication link between Europe and America because of its' longwave transmitter. Today Grimeton has the World's only functioning longwave transmitter. In 2004 the radio station was selected to be the 13th Unesco World heritage in Sweden.

The terrain shifts a bit once you start approaching Varberg. This particular picture is taken from the nature conversion area Nedregården-Storens. I've applied some blur removal using unsharp mask but it's still a bit blurry.

8.
A street in Varberg, not far from the bus and train stations.

9.
An old custom house.Rotated the photo a bit to reduce the tilt and cropped it a bit.

10.
This open-air swimming-baths house was inaugurated in 1903 and has oriental style. It is part of Varberg's bathing life tradition which started with the health spa tradition in the 1800s. Rotated the photo a bit to reduce the tilt and cropped it.
